About this Story

Some people hang on to everything, and some people are ruthless de-clutterers. Watch a TV show like Hoarders and you’ll wonder if it’s ever possible for someone to change their allegiance on the topic. Ideally I’d keep my house pretty neat, but I find it particularly hard to get rid of certain stuff: anything handmade, anything that’s a souvenir of a happy time, and anything that was a gift, even if it doesn’t really have a use in my current life.

There are so many reasons Vic is vehemently anti-clutter. The main reason is his preference for white-on-white decor as a way to keep ghosts from creeping up on him. But deeper than that, I get the feeling he’s moved around a lot. People do pretty deep purges when they move. And even deeper than that is the fact that getting attached to something would probably feel too vulnerable for him.

(Of course, I realize the fourth PsyCop novel starts with Vic being attached to the crappy laminate end table that holds his keys…but that particular situation had nothing to do with the table and everything to do with cold feet.)

Jacob, on the other hand…total sentimental marshmallow. There was never any doubt in my mind.
